How To Remove Laminate From Plywood

Recently I shared with you my plans for my craft room.  Function of those plans included refinishing a buffet/sideboard/whatsoever you desire to call it.  Part of refinishing that buffet included figuring out a way to remove peeling veneer from the sides.

How to Remove Veneer or Laminate from Furniture

This beauty was hanging out in the garage of one of my co-workers.  Her husband wanted garage space. I wanted a buffet.  Win. Win.  This cafe and I were destined to be together.  Unfortunately, we didn't meet before this dazzler suffered some damage.  The veneer on both sides was peeling and the entire buffet was quite scratched.  The scratches didn't concern me.  Most could easily exist stock-still past some light sanding.  The veneer was a new territory for me.

Nate tried sanding and scraping but he could only become part of information technology off.  The balance was not going anywhere.

After some Googling, I pieced together a few tips to attempt and tackle the veneer on my buffet.  Here are my tips if y'all have a beautiful piece of furniture needing some TLC in the veneer department.

Tools:

  • A metallic putty pocketknife
  • An one-time rag/towel
  • An old iron
    • I bought one at the Conservancy Army for $one.50.  This process will make your iron disgusting.
  • A hammer
  • A bucket of h2o
  • Patience
  • A radio station with today'southward greatest hits.  (Justin Timberlake and Ke$ha really speed this process along.)

Process:

  • Get your rag fairly wet.  You want it to be slightly dripping but not sopping wet.
  • Identify the wet rag on the area you lot desire to remove.
    • It's best to avoid whatever exposed wood so you practise not harm that part of the article of furniture.
    • Besides be careful around areas where you lot do non want the veneer removed.  I learned this lesson the difficult way near the sides.  The steam is not forgiving.  I would suggest protecting those areas with dry out rag.
  • Place your atomic number 26 on height of the wet rag. Be very conscientious during this footstep.  The steam is patently hot.  Consider this your alarm.  It'south like those warnings on java cups that tell you that your coffee may burn y'all.  Aforementioned thing.   Use your noggin. (I'g usually really good at injuring myself and surprisingly had no problems doing this only but be careful!!!)

  • Let the atomic number 26 sit for a few minutes.  I used this time to rock out to Rhianna and also practice a footling sanding on the rest of the buffet.
  • Remove the iron and the rag carefully.  Both are  hot.  Over again.  Be careful.  Pretend your mom is watching y'all during this whole process.
  • The veneer volition plough a unlike color.  I institute that when information technology looks like the photo below, it is ready to remove.

  • Use your putty knife to scrape the veneer off.  It will come off pretty easily.  I occasionally used a hammer to lightly tap the putty knife.  If you lot let the iron sit long enough, y'all probably won't demand the hammer.  Don't endeavour to dig at the veneer too much.  You will risk damaging the woods underneath if y'all are non conscientious.
  • While you are scraping one area, requite your rag a quick dunk in some water.  Identify it on the next surface area and let it practice it's thing.  I'm all nigh time savings.
  • Don't rush the iron step.  The longer yous let the iron sit, the less work you have to exercise scraping.
    • Once y'all find that you can no longer easily remove the veneer, stick the wet rag and iron back on information technology.
  • Repeat until all veneer is removed.

I forgot to have great after photos considering I was besides excited to start priming and painting.  As you can sort of come across above, all of the veneer came off and I was left with squeamish wood underneath.

This was not a quick process. I retrieve it took me at least an hr for each side.  One side was easier than the other.  There is probably some more expensive faster version out there but this procedure worked well for my cheap self.

Let me know if you lot have any questions.  I'll answer them in the comment department.

Have you tried to remove veneer or laminate?  Any successes or failures?  Any furniture make-overs in the works?
