Bob: Welcome back to Albany County Fasteners – Fasteners 101. I'chiliad Bob and today I'1000 going to demonstrate how to remove a spinning rivet or a loose rivet. One of our subscribers asked, "how do I practise this"?

I have a rivet that is spinning on y'all, as y'all tin can run into here, the rivet is spinning when you become to drill it out. There you go. Only take a slice of tape, button information technology on the surface…so start your drilling. Go to the center and showtime your drilling. Use your pressure level and your rivet is removed.

A better way actually; I'm going to install another one. Instead of blue record, depending on the surface that y'all are using, and I'm trying to set these, so they spin. I want to check if it's going to spin on me here. Yup, there ya go. Spinning. I'm going to have a piece of duct tape, information technology will even be better than blue tape if it's stubborn and it wants to spin out on you lot and y'all tin can't get enough pressure on information technology.

Have a piece of duct tape, put that baby on there. Find the center. Out information technology goes. Take the duct tape off and the rivet is gone. A couple of ways would exist one: to be able to wedge a screwdriver behind it.

I don't know how much room you may have, you may not have the room to practice this, simply I call up that I have a better solution, using a smash punch. A pointy nail punch, not a flat head nail punch, information technology's gotta have a point on it and I'm going to demonstrate this for yous by just grabbing the edge. I want to show you kickoff, before I exercise that, that this rivet is spinning. Yous tin meet information technology there information technology'due south simply turning with the drill. And so what I'm going to practise is I'm going to catch the border of that, with a dial. Kickoff, I'grand going to gear up the punch so it creates a fiddling hole in it, and so information technology grabs the head. I'm going to proceed my paw hither on the side of it until the drill starts to go through.

Then I'm going to take my paw out of the way, I'm not looking to hurt myself simply this is one mode, possibly, we can do this. I'm going to try and grab it right now and I'm gonna apply force per unit area on information technology. Okay, I'm going to apply the pressure level…and of course I'm having trouble with that. Nope. I'm starting to become it, give me a 2nd. Okay, information technology does desire to go along continuing to spin and you lot will have, possibly, some surface scratches but if you work at it, and you hold it, and you push on it, and slowly turn the drill, it will terminate it. Some other way to try is using a flat head screwdriver, if you have the room; a slotted screwdriver, Okay? You can endeavor with this. I'1000 going to stick information technology in hither and twist it a lilliputian bit to wedge it, to effort to remove it and that will give it enough pressure level to hold the rivet so that the drill can start to drill through it. I'm most there. At that place we go. Right through.

In that location'south one last style that you could try to remove something, and that would be with a cut-off blade on a grinder. That's another way to practice information technology. You could try this, only I've seen this washed earlier, it'due south horrible. It's going to really scuff up the front of the material and you're really non gonna want to use a grinder if it matters to the end, when you're all done.

Besides, a way to prevent any type of scratching when you're using a screwdriver is to take a slice of blueish tape, that y'all use or painters tape, and put the painters tape…on the tip. That will prevent, when yous slip it won't scratch the surface. I didn't use it hither but that would be something to practise to preclude you from scratching the surface if y'all want to keep the surface nice afterward you remove the rivet.

Thanks for watching, I hope this helps you.
